What is Shenandoah institute of Music and Art?

Shenandoah Institute of Music and Art is an ongoing development. The vision for an Anabaptist school of this type was what led to the development of the first summer music camp in 2006. Since that first music camp, many people have expressed interest in being able to study music and the arts for a longer term with more intensive instruction. The student will participate in regular and extensive research and assignments at college level. Class days are Monday–Friday; with hours 8 A.M.–7 P.M. The student will be assessed for accuracy, effort, and quality. As a part of the overall development we are offering coursework in other fields of worship and the arts as well.

Vision Statement

Our calling at Shenandoah Institute of Music and Art is to join Jesus Christ in reconciling all things to Himself. This includes training the creative impulse that is central to our created being. We recognize that this impulse–the artistic bent– all too often is indeed bent and twisted. We are called to be holy sub-creators, modeling how redeemed people are creative in the patterns God intended. This is never to be art for its own sake; it must always be a means of communicating the essential truth and beauty of Jesus Christ, Christianity, and the realities of humanity.

Essential in any field of legitimate Christian work is a heart that passionately wants to serve our Lord. A pure heart, however, is not born with the ability to perceive all the intricacy in our surrounding world. The mind needs the disciplines of training, patience and humility to be productive in the Kingdom. This is an essential–and often neglected–part of Jesus’ command to love our God. We are to love Him not only with the heart, but also with the mind, and the fruit of our labor.

Our vision is to nurture both the mind and the heart, to equip people for competent music and artistic ministry, for the building up of the Kingdom of God, to the glory of Jesus Christ, to the edification of the saints, and to the joy of the artist.

What Courses will be offered?

We plan to start small, and grow as there is demand. It is our commitment to help those who are called to any field of music ministry to be adequately equipped. Through extensive discussion with instructors, we have concluded that for every area of music–whether congregational ministry, education, composition, choral conducting, or singing–the study of music theory is fundamental. Thus the core of our offerings at this point will focus on theory as a required course, with other classes being offered as supplements. We hope to eventually teach theory at four levels; each theory course will have an emphasis on composing as an integral part of learning and utilizing the course content.

Students are expected to take one core course and one supplemental course.
