What is Shenandoah Christian institute of Music?

Shenandoah Christian Institute of Music is an endeavor that has been in development for quite some time. The vision for a school of this type was what led to the development of the first summer music camp in 2006. Since that first music camp, many people have expressed interest in being able to study music for a longer term with more intensive instruction.

Expectations are important; you should know that the school is not designed to be an extended music camp. Studies will be more rigorous; you will have regular and extensive homework; your work will be assessed for accuracy, effort, and quality. We offer studies at college level. As a part of the overall dream, we eventually hope to offer coursework in other fields of art as well. At that time we plan to call this school the “Shenandoah Christian Institute of Music and the Arts.” (SCIM)

SCIM Vision Statement

We believe that a primary calling of the Church is to join Jesus Christ in the reconciling of all things to himself. This includes fleshing out the creative impulse that is central to our being created in the image of God, the creator of heaven and earth. We recognize that this creative impulse–the artistic bent–all too often is indeed bent and twisted. We are called to be holy sub-creators, modeling how the Redeemed are creative after the pattern of their Creator. This is never to be art for its own sake; it must always be a means of communicating the essential truths of Christianity and all humanity, and above all the truth, goodness, and beauty of Jesus Christ.

Essential in any field of legitimate Christian work, from mechanics to construction to child rearing, is a heart that passionately wants to serve our Lord. A pure heart, however, is not born with the ability to diagnose an engine knock or build kitchen cabinets or deal with an angry child; our minds need training to be productive in the Kingdom. This is an essential–and often neglected–part of Jesus’ command to love our God. We are to love Him not only with the heart, but also with the mind.

Our vision is to train both the mind and the heart, to equip people for competent music ministry to the building up of the Kingdom of God and the glory of Jesus Christ, to the edification of the saints, and to the joy of the artist.

What Courses will be offered?

We plan to start small, and grow as there is demand. It is our commitment to help those who are called to any field of music ministry to be adequately equipped. Through extensive discussion with instructors, we have concluded that for every area of music–whether congregational ministry, education, composition, choral conducting, or singing–the study of music theory is fundamental. Thus the core of our offerings at this point will focus on theory as a required course, with other classes being offered as supplements. We hope to eventually teach theory at four levels; each theory course will have an emphasis on composing as an integral part of learning and utilizing the course content.
